Behavior Management
In order to provide students with a safe learning environment, Dixie has established the following school rules:
Dixie students are:
• Safe
• Responsible
• Respectful
In addition to our school rules, each class has their own “School Family Rules.” They are simple and developmentally appropriate for kindergarten students:
• I will listen and follow directions.
• I will be kind to my friends.
• I will be respectful to my teachers.
• I will use safe hands and feet.
• I will use an appropriate voice level.
• I will work hard and try my best.
We encourage and promote positive discipline. Students are praised for being kind, helpful, safe, respectful, and responsible. Our goal is to help children develop an intrinsic desire to make good choices.
If a child is not making good choices, natural consequences are used to help the child learn from their mistakes. Teachers will also provide the child with a “re-teach.” Teachers will re-teach the desired behavior to the child, model the desired behavior with the child, and ask the child to demonstrate the desired behavior independently. Your child’s teacher will routinely communicate with you about their behavior at school.
Attendance
Regular school attendance is critical to the learning process. When your child is absent or tardy, he/she misses valuable instructional time. Students can begin entering the building at 7:15 am. The tardy bell rings and instruction begins at 7:45 am. School ends and children are dismissed at 2:35 pm. If your child is absent or tardy, please send a written excuse in their take-home folder. After three unexcused absences/tardies you will receive a truancy letter in the mail from Fayette County. Please work with us to provide the best education we can for your child. Children will be expected to complete all missed work. Please realize not all activities can be made up at home i.e. hands-on activities and class discussions.
Volunteers
Volunteers are always welcome in the classroom! I usually ask that we have no volunteers for the first month of school to establish our routines and authority. If you are interested in being a volunteer beginning the second week of October, please make sure you fill out a background check with Fayette County Public Schools. Opportunities range from clerical work all the way to running reading stations.
Money
When paying for lunches, field trips, book orders, or other fees, please send the money in a Ziploc bag or sealed envelope in your child’s take-home folder. Label the Ziploc bag or envelope with your child’s name, what the money is for, and the amount enclosed.
Transportation Changes
If your child’s transportation changes, you must notify the office in writing. Please send in a note describing the transportation change in your child’s take-home folder, and we will make sure the office receives the note. Please do not remove the transportation tags from your child’s backpack. Any kindergarten student who walks home must be met by a receiver. Each receiver’s name must be listed on the Student Information Sheet in the office as well as on the blue backpack tag. If there is no one to meet your child we will bring him/her back to the office where they can be picked up.
Kindergarten Success
You and I both want your child to be successful and have a magical and amazing year of learning and discovery! Here are some helpful tips on how to help your child be successful in school:
* Work on teaching your child to tie his or her shoes at home!
* Practice getting dressed, zipping up zippers, buttoning buttons, putting on coats, hats, mittens/gloves, and boots/shoes.
* Keep an extra set of clothes, including socks, in your child’s backpack. You never know when we need a change!
* Label your child’s removable clothing with his or her name or initials (sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, jackets, lunchboxes, etc).
* Leave toys at home. Toys often become a distraction in backpacks and in the classroom.
* In Kindergarten your child will learn how to become more independent. Give them opportunities at home to be independent and have responsibility!
